So no matter what happens with other reality competitions, no show has the credibility or impact American Idol does?

Is everyone else chasing their 'Gold Standard'?  The Producers boast and suggest....If any other talent show thinks it can knock "American Idol" out of the top spot on television, the "Idol" team made it clear  that they're welcome to try.

Are they really the only ones producing the 'Stars'?

Ryan Seacrest says 'just by this current judges panel (minaj, carey, urban), shows the POWER Idol has...(to attract the CURRENT & PAST TOP FEMALE Billboard chart winners)..Do you agree? I guess the 'dust up' of the 2 female judges is some kind of Gold Standard in Reality TV...to spike ratings?

Re: ♪ "The Gold Standard" ♪

Hi, native.  This is really like holding a red cape at a bull to reply to this thread.  Obviously, we're posting on Idol's website and obviously, at least to me, the people who post here are true fans of the show.  To post anything to suggest otherwise is inviting a big outcry.  BUT guess as long as I follow forum rules, I can try even though I believe some of my thoughts are really going to upset some of the posters here.

In terms of this new judging panel which I guess is one of the ways Idol is taunting its competitiors -- although there are big name singers who now represent country, current pop music, current rap or hip hop and Randy (possibly) for us old timers - I do not feel this panel is in anyway superior to the Voice, for example.  I do feel, however, it is a better mix than X-Factor's mentors.  Yes, Mariah is a big name with a lot of past awards and hits-but the key word here is "past" and NOT current.  Which to me mitigates any extra value to having her now as a judge in terms of Idol proving its superiority.  And as a group to work well together and add some humor to the show -  that I think now might be its downfall unless the producers can get the 2 female judges to stop feuding.  And although the mentors on the other shows also disagree at times and "play fight" - again the key word here is "play figtht" which actually makes them really entertaining and fun to watch.    .

Okay, now onto the biggest reason most of the posters here cite for idol's superiority.  And that's its track record in producing the most success stories.  In terms of real star success I would say it's really only Carrie or Kelly and Daughty (although not lately for him).  In terms of potential star success it would be to me Adam or Scotty.  Nashville Star has its Miranda Lambert.

But in either case, not even Kelly became an overnight success as she is now.  It took a few years for Kelly to achieve that.  And to me I don't believe it is fair to use her name or Carrie's to point out why Idol is the best.  Cause Idol has been around going on 12 years now whereas its 2 main competitors are now in their 2nd and third show seasons.  And although I do doubt the winners of these other shows will ever match Kelly or Carrie - I do believe they will be able to make a living now doing music.

In terms of all the others from Idol--sure they have had some minor successes in terms of their songs charting -but that seems to fade 1-2 years post Idol.  I mean yes they are still making music and possibly holding concerts and have dedicated fans which now gives them a  niche markiet.  BUT I strongly doubt they will ever really become a household name except to the real Idol viewers.  And yes there are others who did well on Broadway, the movies and also TV and perhaps that exposure makes them a little more well known.

BUT none of these other niche successes happened overnight either.  So to compare a show like Idol which will soon be on air going on 12 years to its competitors who are really just starting out -- and use or name all its winners and non winners who have had some hits or have appeared on Broadway, TV or the movies --  to use this to point how Idol deserves its ranking is to me like comparing apples to oranges.  Cause these niche long stay successes or star power did NOT happen overnight and did take some years to be in the position these past contestants are now in.

Which is why I don't buy that reason and never have to give added credability to Idol's superiority.  The other shows are still in their infancy and for all we know perhaps in a few years they too will produce some major true star power or contestants who also are able to carve out niche markets for their music.  And think anyone who feels this is still the main reason why Idol is the "golden cadillac" should hold off a few years before boasting.  To first see if these other shows produce winners or non winners after a few years who also are now still making music and adored by their fans who once voted for them.

Well, perhaps Ryan should have mentioned that Idol attracts big-name talent for the judges table because they also pay some of the most outrageously obscene salaries of any reality show ...

Or, Naitve, ,maybe as Habfan so well pointed out, Idol should have offered these celebrity judges much lower salaries and used the remaining monies to finally buy some new song lists which to me would definitely help Idol stay current and perhaps not lose viewers out of boredom from hearing the songs a little too often already.  ha

Isn't X-Factor paying some ridiculous salaries to their judges as well? It's not just Idol paying the big bucks.

I've read that Ms. Spears is getting $15 million for one year as a judge on that show. Pretty close to Ms. Carey's (or Mrs. Cannon, if you will) $18 million for one year on Idol.

I think it is just shameful what these stars get paid to judge a reality TV singing competition show for just one year! The economy as it is (and has been for awhile), with so many people still not able to find work, unable to put food on the table without foodstamp help and losing their homes to foreclosure, this is just abhorrent, IMO.

These stars are already gazillionaires, for crying out loud! Just how much money do these folks need?

You can't take it with you.

Yes, actually I should have reworded my post differently. "All" these reality shows are able to attract big-name talent to their tables because they all throw ridiculously idiotic amounts of money at these people who of course will be more than happy to snap up some of the easiest jack that they'll ever make in their lives. It does make a mockery of what the average person has to deal with in their day to day lives of just trying to make a living. But then again these people are so far removed from the reality that the rest of us have to deal with that the money just becomes more numbers to add to their already obscene bank accounts...
