Kelli Ann - Prof voc/COACH - Recap/scores TOP 5

TOP 5

This will be the 60’s and then some Brit Pop!

Steven VanZant is our guest mentor this week – he rocks.

Also - side note...sorry to not follow up with everyone last week....I lost my pupper Cheyenne after over 14 years together last Thurs night....and with Dakota and her being partners - and him having Cancer....it has been a difficult week.  Positive thougths everyone  - THANKS!  :0)

Hollie – River Deep Mountain High

She really needs to be careful of the low notes, relax her tummy and keep her larynx in neutral.  Both will help her pitch across both highs and lows.  She also lost the key in the  middle of the song…..not enough on the end belt, either….not her best.

M:  B+   S:  8

Phillip – The Letter

So – this was NOT The Letter..it was some other very kewl song…just not even close to The Letter…the melody was completely destroyed and again – we have his pitch thing – all sorta near the pitch – but just never really embracing the pitch…the band did a good job – but this was not a Phillip vocal stellar thing.  If you can’t sing the melody – don’t select the song.

M:  B+  S: 8.5

Skylar – Fortunate Son

Dang, diction girl, diction.  I know this song and I can’t understand half the words she is singing – and it is nothing to do with her accent she is just really all over the place with the words and phrasing them in the melody.  Some pitch sliding in places – good stage presence.

M:  A-   S:  8

Joshua and Phillip duet on You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling

Could they look more uncomfortable?  Poor guys….decent job most of the vocals – lost some harmonies and pitch – but never really loved singing this – Phillip cracked me up – ha!

Jessica – Proud Mary

This felt a bit karaoke for me…..pitch was off in some spots, and her timing on the big belts at ends of phrases was delayed – a bit too much grit – good stage presence.

M:  A-   S:  9

Joshua – Aint’ Too Proud To Beg

Overall pretty good….just felt a lot of ONE NOTE kind of thing..same texture, same dynamic, all vocally the same…..eh, ok….boring after a while.

M:  B  S:  8.9

ROUND TWO

Hollie- Bleeding Love

Some of her phrases are being cut off too short – extend and breathe through the phrase – you can get the breath before the next phrase – you have time.  I don’t want to hear any cheated notes, either…she has the range – but she didn’t go up with the melody where it needs to go in parts…her head voice was lovely and great pitch there.  I think she chickened out – but….in all honesty – she did a very nice job and had good control overall – I enjoyed it.

M:  A-   S:  9.5

Phillip – It’s The Time Of The Season (for Loving)

A lot of pitch issues – a lot of them…head voice was not his strong point –and there were too many instrumental breaks and interludes…this was not really fun at all to listen to or to watch.

M:   C+    S:  7.75

The LADIES come out with “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me…Higher and Higher” – and their voices do not even come close to blending together – they are new to this song…and it just kinda hurts – so….I am fast forwarding this…sorry……I am sure they are great but….oy.

Skylar – You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me

Stunning start to this song – her diction was clear, her pitch was fantastic – and I really believed her – she lost a little pitch in the middle – but just killed the ending.  Nice.

M:  A   S:  9.5

Jessica – You Are So Beautiful

She has an amazing voice – there were just a few pitch problems – but….c’mon – who can sing all curled up on their side like that…American Idol this season needs to quit all the “stage” theatrics – let people sing….we don’t need the fake backup singers and horns on stage – or people curled up in front of candles….let the girl SING!  Stunning ending – chills in spots!

M:  A   S:  9.75

Joshua – To Love Somebody

He showed more of his range with this and I believe he felt it – a few pitch issues, but he really moved through this song better.  Nice!

M:  A-   S:  9.8

Good job everyone – GOOD LUCK!

Re: Kelli Ann - Prof voc/COACH - Recap/scores TOP 5

Howdy!

Thank you!  As a "furparent"....one who has no kids, just alot with "fur"....it is hard on me....Cheyenne was with me since before I owned a house...before alot of things....and...she was just the sweetest girl ever...Dakota, my baby furboy...has never been without her...and...when they diagnosed him with cancer....they said he had 3 weeks to live...so...we are on week 9 now...and I just never expected Chey to go.....I know...she was 14...but she was so strong.  Dakota was there for me - like Chey...last year..when I was diagnosed with cancer...so - all I can do is be there for him  :0)

On Jessica...she is...literally - a voice of a generation - I would like to compare her to what Whitney was to the kids when I was growing up - a voice to grow with...she is so young - but her voice speaks ages more....so - whomever is coaching her - help her remember to stay young while she can - enjoy life - find love..and live it in her voice - she can influence EVERYONE!  She is truly one of the most gifted singers I have heard in a LONG LONG time......she can change the pages of history - if given the chance....I hope she has this opportunity to make the change in favor of a REAL voice...not that of the over "dubbed" stuff we hear....

Kelly Clarkson is amazing.....Carrie Underwood is stunning.....I hope Jessica gets to add her name to the list.....   :0)

Re: Kelli Ann - Prof voc/COACH - Recap/scores TOP 5

[ Edited ]
Edit: sorry, I cannot seem to put line breaks after each paragraph for some reason.  I'll use smiley faces...  !
:smileysad: Kelli Ann, I am also sorry to hear about your loss.  Pets (furry children) are such good friends!
:smileyhappy: Before I forget, what is M: and S: ??  Where you grade the... vocals.
:smileyhappy: About last night, I enjoyed the banter between Stevie and Jimmy.  I also thought that the uncomfortableness between Philip and Joshua was part of the act.  Or maybe you were referring to just when they were singing.  I enjoyed this duet, partly because the other performances were a bit boring and partly because we got to hear Philip do (actually almost sing?) the upper harmony part a couple of times.  I was entertained.  (Does he suffer from Lukas Rossi syndrome, singing through clinched teeth?  Or did Lucas really have a much better voice?) (or both...).  Philip isn't a superior vocalist, but you have to admit, he is a scream personality-wise.
:smileyhappy:I thought Hollie's stage presence was 500% improved.  She is my favorite (my sentimental favorite, but maybe the least "quality-wise" of the remaining contestants), but I say she was 5 times better just because she had such a long way to go. (Like, on a scale from 1 to 100, she was a 10 and last night maybe she improved to a 50.)  This week she almost looked like she belonged stage (not as an amateur, all their performances are superior for that.  I'm talking about someone who would get paid night after night to sing).  One improvement: when Hollie wanted to bend over during a dramatic portion of the song  she did it less and she remained focused on the audience (at the same time) instead of singing to the floor.  I was impressed greatly - compared to previous weeks.
:smileyhappy: Skylar - I love "Fortunate Son", but I was a bit underwhelmed by her presentation.  One thing: this is a song of protest and anger, so... don't smile through the whole song???   I'd suggest when you make Skylar mad, it is not a pretty sight!!! -  I would have liked her to channel a little anger and fear (of being sent of to war) into her stage performance.
:smileyhappy:The last performances of the show were good - I didn't start watching until 10:30 pm so maybe I was underwhelmed by the whole thing just because I was exhausted.
:smileyhappy:One last observation: I did think Hollie's second performance backed up her first one - as a believable entertainer.
:smileyhappy: Kelli Ann:  What will happen !!!  Not who is the best (I think the total package of Jessica, loud, soft, soft and intense at the same time, quiet, upbeat, vocals pretty darn good technically every time... is twice as good as any of the other contestants), but who will win American Popularity Contest (with Singing)?
:smileyhappy: I love Hollie, but:
a) I will be really surprised if she doesn't go home tonight
b) I could see any of the remaining contestants winning*
:smileyhappy:   * Hmmm.  What I can really see is a reason why each of the remaing four "can't" win:
Jessica got the least votes a few weeks ago (supposedly, I think the results were "fixed")
Joshua to me has a little of that sameness each week; like Philip but with better vocals.  And he was (supposedly) in the bottom three with seven contestants remaining.
Philip... I love him, he is my second favorite for American Personality Contest slash Soap Opera (with singing).  From a "casting" standpoint he has added a lot to the show.  But, vocally, HE JUST ISN'T THAT GOOD!
Skylar.  I have appreciated that she had done justice to every song and every different type of song that she has sung.  While I like her range and diction, it is her performances that have that "sameness" to me.
:smileyhappy:The only thing that would shock me tonight is if Jessica went home.  Then it would truely be a wide-open amateur night free-for-all race to the finish.  If that were to happen I think even Hollie could compete for the win.
:smileyhappy: :smileyhappy: :smileyhappy:   What do you think?

Re: Kelli Ann - Prof voc/COACH - Recap/scores TOP 5

I almost think Phillip wanted to throw the competition with "Season..."  I was honestly upset listening to him do that song.  When I saw the set list, I was so hoping he would be the one doing "You are so beautiful."  (P2 has an element of Lee DeWyze to me... anyone else get that?  and I <3 Lee)

That is really the only thing I have to say about last night... I wasn't blown away by anyone, but I was entertained by the boys duet.  Funny...

Re: Kelli Ann - Prof voc/COACH - Recap/scores TOP 5

Kelli Ann, I am so sorry to hear about Cheyenne :smileysad: When you said you lost your furbaby, I thought it was Dakota with the cancer. What a rough loss. I have two older cats--one I got as a feral rescue before I met my husband, one I rescued from the euthanasia room 10 years ago & I don't know what I will do w/o them when they go. I really enjoy your reviews every week. You seem to be the last of the recappers since the show started & I really learn from your vocal expertise. I really thought everyone was very good this week. I definitely think this is one of the strongest groups in a while. I was shocked that Holly, who I really thought should have gone home a couple weeks back was imo the best last night (though I thought Jessica's second song was the best of the night.) I have gone from wanting a Jessica/Phillip finale to now feeling like Phil is the one who should go home (I know he won't be).

Re: Kelli Ann - Prof voc/COACH - Recap/scores TOP 5

Thankyou ALL again for your kind words and thoughts.   Each day is a little better, but never the same.....

I have been hearing rumors that Jessica is in trouble - wow...hope not!  And, yes, I felt like Phillip was tossing in the towel like "I am in pain, can I go now?"

M:  is my score for marketability - I consider this as their package, as well as what they did with the individual song....sometimes the song may be ick...but they are still marketable - sometimes they song is great, but not so marketable, etc....I think of it as the "curve" on which I would sign them

S:  Score - 1 to 10 - and I use the decimals - hahaha!

I also had a week where I included "Buy it" and "See It" - just because - for instance - I would SEE Joshua - but you can't RECORD what he does the same way - it would be boring.....same thing for Phillip - sure...I migth go see him - but I am not buying the CD.  Which was one of the reasons I thought Colton went home too soon - he had both SEE IT and BUY IT value....but - hopefully he will still have both!  :0)

Also - Idol should consider going forward with the wardrobing - it is TOO Pageanty - and older looking - on the girls.....period.  I like pageants (not the bad ones - lol) - but c'mon - those clothes are often from the overdone 70's and 80's pageants....whoa!  Back off on the bedazzling!

HUGS TO ALL!  PEACE!

Re: Kelli Ann - Prof voc/COACH - Recap/scores TOP 5

Hi Kelli,

Love your recaps, agree most of the time. I know this is American Idol, but I'm curious what you thought of Melanie Amaro? I feel that Jessica, Joshua along with Melanie are three of the best new voices out there with almost unlimited upside. I'm just a fan don't know any of them, just wanted a professional opinion off the three.  thks!
